Sexism in Stock Photos? - Why it Matters
Originally, I started doing research for this post, and I was planning to write something like "10 science backed reasons that women should have careers..." (Maybe I'll write that one later)
But THEN, I went to find an image to use, and was enraged by the stock photos presented to me when I typed in "Working Women" in the platform.
These are the options they gave me:
This is a real screenshot of some of the options presented to me!
What Sticks Out?
While granted, there are a few decent images, let's take a look at the rest. Working women are...
- Primarily White
- Dog Walkers
- Cosmetologists
- Interior Decorators
God forbid they come in all shapes, sizes, careers, and ethnicities? God forbid we paint what a real working woman looks like.
If sexism is real even in the realm of stock photos... we have a lot of work to do.
Who's with me in driving a change?
